Painting Title:- The Covenant Text: Exodus 34 One could accuse Turner of blunting the message of the Bible by representing a moment of revelation and awe as mild and domesticated. But he is at least questioning the meaning of the event. The  painting is not a symptom of cultural malaise with respect to the problem of sin. Its ethos is more difficult to dismiss than that. The visual pleasure is in an unexpected invitation to "delight in  the law of God"  (Romans 7:22). Esther D. Reed.
